The Sewing Cooperative
Established in 2017 by Lydia Witt, a costume-maker by training, The Sewing Cooperative is based in Rome, Italy, providing tailoring jobs to refugees from Africa. Under Lydia’s tutelage, the tailors produce tote bags, jewelry cases, dresses, and a variety of household decor items which are sold in markets and pop-up events. They also provide traditional tailoring services to residents in the local communities as well as produce custom-fitted designs.
The Sewing Cooperative currently works with refugees from Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, and Mali. In the past, they have worked with refugees from Senegal, Guinea, Eritrea, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
As a partner organization, Crescendo will carry the ready-made products and work closely with Lydia to expand The Sewing Cooperative’s impact in Europe and the US.
